Behind the Black Line: Understanding the Causes of Dental Crown Discoloration

One of the best tools in a dentist’s arsenal for restorative treatments is dental crowns. These prosthetic caps can slip right over an existing tooth after it’s been treated for decay or damage. This creates a natural-looking and sturdy restoration that lasts for years. However, sometimes black lines or rings can form around the gumline near a crown.

If this has happened to you, continue reading to learn more about how dental crowns are made and what could be causing this discoloration.

What Are Crowns Made Of?

High-quality dental crowns are made of porcelain or other ceramic material. However, sometimes dentists use metal-fused porcelain to cut costs. This means that the outer “shell” is made from ceramic, but the inner core is some kind of metal. This could be silver, gold, or another amalgam for durability.

What Creates the Black Lines?

Unfortunately, a side-effect of these cheaper metal-sleeved crowns is that they can peek out from the gumline. This is the most likely scenario for what you’re experiencing with the discoloration around your crown.

Sometimes cavities can form in the tooth structure under crowns if poor oral hygiene is present. If this is the case, then your dentist will need to diagnose the decay to fix it.

Your gumline can also recede away from the crown. This is often caused by gum disease, brushing too aggressively, or using tobacco products. Even if your dentist hid the metal area in your gums well, a recession could reveal its dark coloration.

What Can I Do?

Your dentist will need to diagnose your problem first. If the revelation of your metal-fused crowns is caused by dental issues, they will need to be addressed. Your dentist may recommend a softer toothbrush or quitting smoking. Otherwise, they’ll need to fill in any cavities present or replace your old crowns with newer, high-quality porcelain.

If you see black lines appear around your dental crowns, your first order of business is calling your dentist. With their eye for detail and extensive knowledge, they’ll know exactly what to do to solve your problem. Don’t wait to see if the black lines disappear on their own, schedule an appointment, and make a plan. Your smile may depend on it!
